We think how much?! And they’re what?!

‘We think 60,000 to 70,000 thoughts in one day, and 90% of those thoughts are the same as the day before.’

Dr Joe Dispenza

Who is counting these? Beside the point… Thoughts matter more than we think.

Thoughts are not just mindless words floating around having no consequence. No, they have very significant consequences. They influence our subconscious which is something we should all take notice of. Our behaviour doesn’t just come out of nowhere, we tell ourselves how to behaviour whether we are consciously aware of it or not. Our thoughts control our behaviour and it’s a big deal because our behaviour controls our actions. From our actions we form habits and our habits either get us into trouble, soar us to success or we end up somewhere in-between.

So, 90% of our thoughts are the same as yesterday. And according to the American philosopher William James, 99% of our thoughts are actually useless. Well that’s boring! Just imagine, we think 60-70 thousand times a day, most of those thoughts we thought yesterday and they are useless (well maybe if we don’t use them properly!). It makes you wonder how we get anywhere without going around in circles!

And some people do. Go around in circles.

So how do we change? We change our thoughts of course.

Ok so that is a big topic and certainly not for one blog post. But we need to start somewhere. Let’s start by being aware of our thoughts.

So what do you think? Are your thoughts the same each morning when you wake up, when you start work or when you go to sleep? Perhaps you think a lot about how you look, how you are not so good at something or how you will never get what you want. Perhaps it is time to take check on what’s running through your mind on a daily basis. Are you sounding like a broken record or are your thoughts inspiring you to live your best life?

A picture of me thinking on the train ride home from work. Consciously thinking new thoughts. Visionary thoughts. Thoughts that will serve me well in the future!

Here is a something for you to try. Start tomorrow by being aware of your thoughts. What is popping into your mind as soon as you wake up? Are you thinking about the past or are you visualizing how good your day is going to be?

With all those thoughts we can either go around in circles or create an amazing future. What will it be for you?
